I was lucky enough to see her and her touring band at the Metal Female Voices Fest in October this year and it was like being in the presence of the Snow Queen or a norse shaman – sheer magical magnetism.

Some artists have to work hard when on stage, but Tarja is one of the few whose presence alone captures the audience. And then there is her voice. One person found this helpful. When I bought this CD I expected the old Nightwish riffs to be non-existent but to my pleasant surprise there was actually still plenty of energy in this album – guitar riffs included!

She has such powerful emotion in her voice that can carry you through the album so easily from beginning to end. Highly recommended to anyone who enjoyed Tarja from Nightwish but do expect something different musically. I would recommend purchasing both editions of this album – Deluxe and UK. The UK edition has a bonus track called “The Seer” which doesn’t appear on the Deluxe album and is perhaps my favourite track on the entire album.

Overall, Tarja has found a unique and enchanting blend of both classical and metal elements with an underlying story which the listener is quickly drawn into. Five stars. Iv’e always loved Tarja’s vocals they never failed to please when she was in nightwish ,always exceptional i think she was destined to go solo she’s a class act , it was intriguing to know what direction she would take musically on her own and i really feel with my winter storm she has found her true niche its superb ,a beautifully haunting cd , i just get the feeling that Tarja enjoyed making this cd ,her voice is at its best she is a singing story teller as with all tarja,s work there are great moments ,brilliant moments and those wonderfully inspired Tarja moments ,plenty of those on this cd it all blends together wonderfully , there are the odd nightwish guitar riffs thrown in so it wont dissapoint the nightwish die hard fans , the artwork on the cd is lovely too , its nice to find a well put together package , i’m looking forward to playing this one in the still of night its one to close your eyes to I’ve got three of her albums and I think this is the best, mainly ballads with the exception of a couple, one of these being Lost Northern star kind of reverting to Nightwish style.

My favourite tracks are : I walk alone, Sing for me, Our great divide, and Damned and divine, plenty more to like on this album. Report abuse. This is very symphonic and thoughtful but lacks the rock “Thump” behind it that I prefer. I first discovered the band due to the recommendation of a friend and from the first time I heard Nemo, to the Walt Disney tribute Fantasmic, every word and sound had me hooked like a drug.

But naturally, it did not last and Tarja was fired from the band. Now comes the debate. Critics and ‘loyalists’ to Nightwish say that the true fans stay with the band even with their new lead singer.

And I am sorry but Annette is not Tarja. Her high pitched squeaky voice does nothing to capture the power and emotion previously given to us and if anything is out of place in that style of music. Something akin to Brittney Spears singing with Korn. Not pretty. In fact it is at the point where I cannot listen to their new cd due to Annette butchering the sound, despite my hope they MIGHT save the album.

In my personal opinion, they will not last. Tarja’s new cd came as a saving grace to me and I was more then eager to get it. I will say I believe any actual Nightwish fan will be more compelled to check out this album then Dark Passion Play and the like. Technical Review: Bottom line, Tarja’s voice is just as powerful and emotional as always, and upon hearing even just the first few songs I was taken back. Musically some of the songs lack the power of previous Nightwish albums like Once, but then again that is hard to top.

Many of the songs from My Winter Storm carry a more sorrowful tone, which does not lack. So my final review is just this, while it is not as powerful as Tarja’s former works with Nightwish, it certainly is a remarkable improvement from Dark Passion Play.

And I hope this review encourages Nightwish fans to at least give this album a chance, regardless of what Nightwish’s ‘true fans’ say. Everyone who is familiar with the heavy metal band Nightwish, last year the band had an acrimonious split with their former lead singer Tarja Turunen. It came to a shock for every fan of the band as well as Tarja. After a year since her dismissal fromt he band, Tarja returns to the music scene with a new album.

I have to admit I have enjoy the new Nightwish album and their new singer Anette but alas I had missed hearing Tarja’s operatic vocals.

Thankfully I recently got a hold of her new solo album. Some of the songs left a flat taste in my mouth. Now that I am listening to the album again, the songs are starting to grow on me. Tarja sounds as good as she ever did when she was with Nightwish.

Her classically trained vocals takes a front seat on the album. I have noticed that there is a distinct classical sound. Atmospheric, particularly Oasis. Each song has it’s own sound world and diverse concept, but yet it all hangs together quite well. For me, the use of a classical music theme to open the album was very strong, and drew me into the sound world. My least favorite song is Poison, and for me could have been left off the album as for me it does not fit the ideas of the sound world.

The song “You Would Have Loved This” on a bonus edition is particularly touching, especially for anyone remembering a lost loved one over the Christmas season. Tarja has worked hard on developing her voice and it shows on this album. Love this album! One person found this helpful. I have loved Tarja’s operatic voice since she first emerged in Nightwish in the mid 90’s. She definitely has a voice and style all her own, especially when compared to other “popular” artists of today. This album is by far her crowning achievement.

Not only has she continued to make awe-inspiring music, but she also proved that she does not need her former band members from Nightwish. After all, most of the instrumental players in a band are replaceable — it’s the vocalist that makes the band. Highly recommended for fans of opera-like vocals and Gothic rock.

The beautiful choruses, the string ensemble melodies and the mild percussion make the music very enjoyable and create a perfect romantic atmosphere. Nevertheless, when it comes to producing symphonic metal, then the album loses some of its quality. There is not a drop of Nightwish style here. Tarja isn’t obviously writing all of the music and has a crew of producers, managers and other people to do the job.

Since so many people are working at the music then it’s sad but true that the stitches joining the ideas start to unravel in some places. That always happens when it comes to industrial production of music. The minus of the album is that the metal background becomes monotonous by the end.

A major danger while composing long releases. However, Turunen has always been a good singer and she does a fine job on this album as well. We will definitely see her making more good music and developing her own fine style. The beautiful Finnish language ballad “Oasis” is also one of the best tracks of the album. Though I like Mozart’s “Requiem” a lot I don’t think that using bits of it in the two opening songs of the album would add much to it.

Her “I’m never tired when it comes to praising myself” attitude isn’t a plus either but at the same time Dark Passion Play features it as well and whether we want it or not this is an essential attitude for most celebrities.

As a result I’ll make a nice clear conclusion. Tarja’s My Winter Storm isn’t exactly the best album of the year but it shows great potential and I’m sure that a grand future lies ahead of Tarja and she has the talent to create best music.

She definitely sings with much more variety in tone than she ever did with Nightwish, but that is to be expected. To better illustrate this, this is very much a parallel to the time when pop legend Peter Gabriel left Genesis around 30 years before Tarja left Nightwish, and then struggled with his first couple of solo albums to eventually find his true self on his third So with the subsequent solo album “What Lies Beneath” on top of this bit of history, there is all the more reason to believe that Tarja has alot ahead of her in her solo career.

Okay, back to the album itself. The song “Oasis” sounds like it belongs on an Enya album, but hey, Tarja’s abilities are more than compatible with such a style, and she did a great job with it. The Alice Cooper cover “Poison” was definitely catchy, and even kind of funny. I know this might sound strange, but I thought that even the short interludes, especially “The Escape of The Doll” were really intriguing. Overall, when seen from the proper perspective in terms of transition, this album is truly a work of art, and I have no objections whatsoever.

There are still some serious guitars and synths in there, but in terms of Metal, think of it as more like Precious than Heavy.

Standout rocking tracks are ‘I Walk Alone’, ‘Die Alive’ and ‘Ciaran’s Well’, but then you have songs like ‘Boy And The Ghost’ and ‘Sing For Me’ which begin with beautiful simplicity, drawing you in to really listen to the vocals, then building up to a powerful climax.

Then you come to a really gentle track – ‘Oasis’ – but just as you get acclimatised to it, the very next track is Tarja’s unique take on Alice Cooper’s ‘Poison’ which raises the tempo again, before subsiding into melodic loveliness for ‘Our Great Divide’.

In fact, it’s difficult to say precisely where the boundaries of the various styles lie, such is the seamless progression within and between the songs. You just need to listen to it without any preconceptions. If you have the opportunity to see Tarja live, then don’t miss it.

I was lucky enough to see her and her touring band at the Metal Female Voices Fest in October this year and it was like being in the presence of the Snow Queen or a norse shaman – sheer magical magnetism.

Some artists have to work hard when on stage, but Tarja is one of the few whose presence alone captures the audience. And then there is her voice. One person found this helpful. When I bought this CD I expected the old Nightwish riffs to be non-existent but to my pleasant surprise there was actually still plenty of energy in this album – guitar riffs included! She has such powerful emotion in her voice that can carry you through the album so easily from beginning to end.

Highly recommended to anyone who enjoyed Tarja from Nightwish but do expect something different musically. I would recommend purchasing both editions of this album – Deluxe and UK.

The UK edition has a bonus track called “The Seer” which doesn’t appear on the Deluxe album and is perhaps my favourite track on the entire album. Overall, Tarja has found a unique and enchanting blend of both classical and metal elements with an underlying story which the listener is quickly drawn into.

Just Love It. Love this cd, tarja is one of my most favorite singers of all time, so i was thrilled to find out she did solo work after nightwish. This cd i would recommend to anyone, it really came together well, and i absolutely loved the music on it.

Been waiting for Deluxe version of “My winter storm” since concert in Kiev in I first heard Tarja in Fell in love with her voice from the firts song “She is my sin” Wishmaster album I loved Bonus DVD part about making the album.

I never expect all tracks fit my taste. But this albumbis quite acceptable. I enjoy it. Unfortunately the Tarja’s voice is as lovely as always. Unfortunately the backing support band doesn’t have as heavy of a sound to provide that striking and delicious contrast we heard when she sang with the Nightwish gang. Tarja lets her emotions run free in this. A somewhat dark release, but will run a spectrum of feelings for the listener.

Verified Purchase. Personal Review: I will say I am no music critic, or professional. I am however a writer and artist, one who has used the power of Nightwish’s music for some time for emotional and spiritual inspiration. I first discovered the band due to the recommendation of a friend and from the first time I heard Nemo, to the Walt Disney tribute Fantasmic, every word and sound had me hooked like a drug.

But naturally, it did not last and Tarja was fired from the band. Now comes the debate. Critics and ‘loyalists’ to Nightwish say that the true fans stay with the band even with their new lead singer.

And I am sorry but Annette is not Tarja. Her high pitched squeaky voice does nothing to capture the power and emotion previously given to us and if anything is out of place in that style of music. Something akin to Brittney Spears singing with Korn.

Not pretty. In fact it is at the point where I cannot listen to their new cd due to Annette butchering the sound, despite my hope they MIGHT save the album. In my personal opinion, they will not last.

Tarja’s new cd came as a saving grace to me and I was more then eager to get it. I will say I believe any actual Nightwish fan will be more compelled to check out this album then Dark Passion Play and the like. Technical Review: Bottom line, Tarja’s voice is just as powerful and emotional as always, and upon hearing even just the first few songs I was taken back. Musically some of the songs lack the power of previous Nightwish albums like Once, but then again that is hard to top.

Many of the songs from My Winter Storm carry a more sorrowful tone, which does not lack. So my final review is just this, while it is not as powerful as Tarja’s former works with Nightwish, it certainly is a remarkable improvement from Dark Passion Play.

And I hope this review encourages Nightwish fans to at least give this album a chance, regardless of what Nightwish’s ‘true fans’ say. Everyone who is familiar with the heavy metal band Nightwish, last year the band had an acrimonious split with their former lead singer Tarja Turunen. It came to a shock for every fan of the band as well as Tarja. After a year since her dismissal fromt he band, Tarja returns to the music scene with a new album.

I have to admit I have enjoy the new Nightwish album and their new singer Anette but alas I had missed hearing Tarja’s operatic vocals. Thankfully I recently got a hold of her new solo album. Some of the songs left a flat taste in my mouth. Now that I am listening to the album again, the songs are starting to grow on me. Tarja sounds as good as she ever did when she was with Nightwish. Her classically trained vocals takes a front seat on the album. I have noticed that there is a distinct classical sound.

There still is a hard rock edge but it is more subtle and it takes a back seat to Tarja’s classical roots. I’m not really sure what to make of Tarja’s cover of the Alice Cooper song “Poison”.
