My state, also known as “Crossroads of the East”, has confusing layers of municipal, county, state and federal highways. There’s almost as many cars as people. A 15 inch screen provides a nice overview assuming you can find a way to prop up a laptop in your car. The typical seven-inch screen is really too limited. You are mostly dependent on the voice through your stereo speakers. The Windows system can be programed for a specific route following someone’s instructions.

Some dedicated dash navigators do have the “multi-destination” feature which is similar to route programming; but any microcontroller device has the intelligence of an insect. Routing through spaghetti junctions is like playing chess.

All my Magellan can say is: “Make a legal U-turn. Those of you used to WindowsXP will have to stumble around a little as I did, but I feel that placing this huge application in its own partition will free your system partition and allow it to defrag quicker.

From that picturesque Start screen, click on Desktop, then on the folder in the menu bar at the bottom of the screen. Right click on Computer on the far left of the window to bring up Computer Management, then Disk Management, then right click on C: , then Shrink Volume I shrank my System C: partition down to 97 GB.

That left GB free. Right click on Unallocated. A pleasant surprise, the drawing option for creating boxes and ellipses works much better than it did on my old Dell WindowsXP laptop. The new antenna locator is much smaller but at least as sensitive as the one that was included from my old version. It doesn’t even need the included USB extension cord.

Something unexpected has happened since I reviewed this application two years ago. To my surprise, the maps on my laptop are being updated with a few extra mouse-clicks using the Driving Directions command. I’m not complaining.

One person found this helpful. Normally I wouldn’t have urchased the version that included the GPS unit, but I found it here for less than the software only version. I installed this version, re-imported customers and it works fine. I typically plan out trip routes, using the drive time features to pick up extra stops along the way. It works fine, great for this, five stars.

Where it falls short is on the ground, live while driving. If we look at these, it’s definitely 5 stars. Want to use it as your live, real time GPS?

I did install Streets and Trips on Windows 7 64 system. It works flawlessly. Actually the older version streets and trips also installed on my Window 7 64 bit system. The GPS that it comes with installed quickly and is accurate. You can plug it into your USB or use the extension cable it comes with to place it next to a window. I had no trouble getting a quick fix indoors. It does list all the streets in Sierra Nevada foothills. If you are looking for software that list all the coffee shops in a small town, this program is not the answer.

It only list 5 places in a town with a population of 30 thousand, however it is perfectly wonderful at finding addresses. At the price and with the software’s ability to turn a laptop into a GPS receiver without the internet makes this is a great value.

The GPS alone could cost this much. I have one question for Amazon. Standalone or ‘phone GPS travel planning devices are OK for limited trips of miles or so, but leave a lot to be desired when planning a trip of several hundred or thousand miles, since you can’t easily modify the selections to include the areas you want to visit.

You can buy the updates alone, or for a nominal fee, purchase a GPS, which shows your position on the PC screen. As good as it is for overall planning and checking our progress, we find it necessary to use a standalone Garmin GPS for real time tracking of our route. Have one to sell?

It doesn’t show it and I want to install it at the same location on a different drive of my system where all my other programs are installed! The instruction sheet says if you have trouble installing, enter the given address in the search window. I can’t find that search window on Windows 8.

I had another HP Laptop and it crashed. My new HP Laptop came with Windows 8, not by choice. I have had numerous problems with Windows 8, mostly because it is so different then the last one It had Windows XP I have an HP laptop only a couple months old. At another spot it said it was compatible. I can get around but not with technical issues.

This is not surprising as best practices is for things to NOT automatically run without end-user involvement. Although autorun and autoplay were convenient, in terms of security and their potential danger, it was best to be rid of them.
