Almost any act in the game is a struggle, but satisfaction wins out over frustration throughout. Driving these virtual machines is tough because it feels so real, and you don’t feel cheated when you flip end over end or fail to reach the top. You simply try again with a different strategy.
Gamers looking for human competition may be disappointed. By and large, Screamer 4X4 is a single-player affair with a limited and hard-to-use multiplayer component. Gameplay realistically stresses the battle between you and terrain, not other vehicles, and though it may not appeal to everyone, it’s true to real off-road rally racing. Unfortunately, controls are a mind-boggling hassle — getting most analog sticks and wheels to work is difficult, an aspect surprisingly underdeveloped by the designers.
The digital control is actually very accurate, but gamers using analog sticks will need to check, recheck and tweak setups to fine tune steering and such. Idea for game: drive a Land Rover slowly around some mountains in the rain at night.
As pitches go, it’s not quite Monkey Tennis, but neither is it a concept guaranteed to send gamers into paroxysms of unfettered joy. Unless, of course, they like Land Rovers or are Welsh scarcely mutually exclusive characteristics.
The idea somehow managed to get through though, and essentially, Screamer 4×4 recreates the experiences of a sheep farmer, albeit with a slightly competitive edge What it doesn’t do is have any connection whatsoever with the original Screamer , an ancient arcade-style racer of some repute.
From a completely different developer, the wholly inappropriate use of the Screamer name is simply a fairly desperate attempt by Virgin to draw attention to what is an almost unmarketable game. That’s not to say it’s unplayable, it’s just that the concept will inevitably fly over the heads of gamers drunk on futuristic racers and inner city carnage. Midtown Madness this isn’t.
