My first and favorite shooter was RTCW. I was so into it that I got picked to beta test ET, which took some tweaking to get right initially, but was very successful and FREE to download and play.

Fast forward to today and they are all ported and suffer from consolitis. Brink is no exception, but it fares better than most. I only play HC mode in those games. It has the funky art style and character model customization for the ADD crowd.

I don’t care for it that much and it is fairly inconsequential to the gameplay. You don’t notice other players tattoos and face paint in frantic battles same as Black ops.

The dreaded XP system encourages teamwork at at least attempts to. It’s a complicated game for a newbie and even having played other SD games, I find it overly complex. The weapons, abilities, attachments, class system and body types are a bit too much IMO. No matter how good you are, you can’t win without teamwork. A good team can lead to a real imbalance on a pub though if you are playing with strangers.

The VOIP is not working yet? The menu system is a little complicated. The objective wheel again attempts to bribe you into teamwork and give you a clue what to do, in what can be overwhelming games to a newbie.

It was obviously built with consoles in mind, even though this should be a PC multi-player game only. The SP as noted is nothing more than a training system for the MP and should have been marketed as such to avoid confusion.

It is not a linear campaign people are used to. I don’t buy games for SP and knew full well going in.

Coming from a RTCW and ET background, no other game has come close to filling in the void that my first real game has created. Finally something has come to fit the bill. What you have here is a team based game. Maps are driven by objectives instead of kills and each person is vital in some way to the success of the team. Add in fast movements and actual gunfights that don’t end from a single bullet and you start to see what Brink offers.

I purchased it several days ago on a Steam sale and have not looked back.. The innovation alone makes it a great game.. Its a game that got a bad start but really deserves to be played now.
