My colleague in China I’m in Chicago reported that when he opens Outlook, he gets a “server unavailable” message. However, when he connects to our VPN and then opens Outlook, it’s fine, although slower. I’m guessing here, but it is likely that there is something here with the Chinese proxy systems that is interfering with his connection to Rackspace.

I’m guessing that if he went out of the country he’d be able to access it without any issues. The only other possibility that comes to mind is that he has it misconfigured in his client so that it points to a local to your network dns name that then points to the rackspace server.

When he connects to our VPN, internet requests on his laptop are routed through our office. Outlook Anywhere must be enabled, it will look for the mail server set in the Outllook Connection settings.

If that works get them to hold down the CTRL key and right click the Outlook icon bottom right hand corner. Run the Test Email Autoconfiguration and this should highlight where the connection is failing.

Is it possible for security reasons that Rackspace only allows access to your Exchange Server via a subset of IP addresses? That is one way that mail servers are protected and could prevent the user from accessing the server from anywhere except within the company’s IP address range, including VPN addresses.
