In general, the main benefit of using the bit version of Office, is that it can use access memory when needed. With the bit version of Office, the application can only use up to 2GB of memory, even when more is available in your computer. Using the bit version of Office will for instance allow you to work with large data sets like Excel workbooks or Project files that are over 2GB in size.

Similarly, when you are working with large Word documents or PowerPoint presentations that are very rich with multimedia pictures, videos, complex animations, etc… or large tables or other embedded objects, the bit version can be of help. The bit version of Office also offers a security benefit as it always has Hardware Data Execution Prevention DEP enabled although this can be enabled for the bit version as well. We are mainly bit because the default for O Office install was the bit version. We are not doing anything in Office needing bits so its not an issue. We mainly do bit because of an important add-in that only works with bit, but if you have users who work in large Excel spreadsheets, bit is an absolute must for them.

I’ve only had to install 64bit office for one user in accounting that had a massive spreadsheet that would just hang. As mentioned by others in this in this thread, Microsoft recommends bit as well now they didn’t used too. Also, any user that is working with large spreadsheets should be given bit as-well, we’ve seen it have a night and day difference for the user. We’re ditching the old Finance package and moving to a new business application that has integrated accounting, and will be testing 64bit with it this year. We use the bit version and never had any issues. The one users we have that use the bit version are our Sage 50 Accounts users as Sage support tells us its not compatible with the bit version Office. We run Office 64bit to take advantage of bigger excel files, and haven’t met with any problems yet on Windows 10 64bit machines or the older Win7 64bit.

I will consider 64 bit on local machines where the memory usage is exceeding the 32 bit limits, though this doesn’t happen very often. I tried deploying 64 bit. Unfortunately we have other software that uses 32bit components of office and it caused problems, so went back to 32bit. Can’t say as I have seen a major difference.

Most of what you do in Office on a daily basis doesn’t seem to really matter. Then a while back i was doing some testing and grabbed a fresh copy from microsoft and realised MS had at some point switched the default installer from 32Bit to 64bit on their website so all our home users we’re getting the 64bit version anyway without realising it and no one had been complaining about issues.

So we bit the bullet tested first and decided if MS is pushing 64bit by default now is the time to start using the 64bit version. We were probably late to the 64bit party but have been pushing Office 64bit since version Edit : Our accounts machines continue to run the 32bit version – and will until Sage decide to pull their finger out and update their products to work with the 64bit version.

No details about the speed issues were given and I’ve seen several that wouldn’t necessarily be improved by switching to Inefficient macros and the accidental insertion of thousands of images come to mind immediately. We had issues with the bit version but that was 10 years ago. Right now we are using bit Office which I install a licensed version on my systems.

I am hoping to convince my Manager to go with Office installation from their website the next time we replace systems since we are also paying for the full blown version anyway but are just using it for their Webmail.

It looks like we’re not the only ones with a small percentage of users forced to be on 32bit due to legacy software. That is the primary question, will there be speed improvements? We have a user working with a very large spreadsheet right now, and I don’t think we ever considered upgrading them to bit because of all the warnings I had seen in the past.

Clearly everyone else has seen those same warnings and there is no new information on the subject. The fact that it installs by default now is an implicit recommendation. Their reasons for installing the bit version are also things that explicitly will not work with the bit version. We use three different older software pieces, two directly integrate with Office products, and the other one uses access to reference one piece.

Other than that, we have had several strange issues with small nuances when 64 bit is installed. We just only install it if it is required for some specific reason, and that has been very rare.
