Look, this is not bad, but when you give us cut scenes even if they were washed out in the last game, you should give us them here too! Like the other X games, this one is quite story-driven.

Our heroes, X and Zero need to stop Sigma who has once again been brought back. X and Zero are really up against it this time. I liked the story; it is a good continuation of the last game and you have three different endings to experience. Not a great deal has changed with the visuals in Mega Man X5. To be fair, this was already a great looking game and Capcom kept things very similar for this title. I like the way the different Mavericks looked and the level design is pretty cool with many what looks like prerendered elements to them that really do help them pop.

The series’ primary antagonist, a «Maverick» Reploid named Sigma has been revived once again. Sigma begins conducting research on the origin and design of the «Maverick Hunter» Zero and decides to discover how to unlock Zero’s true power, hoping to destroy Sigma’s nemesis Mega Man X in addition. Sigma attacks the Maverick Hunters directly, intending to lose. When he does, he spreads a Maverick virus across the Earth, throwing it into chaos.

Meanwhile, a Reploid mercenary named Dynamo is hired by Sigma to make the space colony Eurasia collide with Earth. The Hunters have only 16 hours to stop the collision. In order to prevent Eurasia from striking the planet, the Hunters pursue two options. The first option is to fire a powerful cannon called «Enigma» at Eurasia, vaporizing it.

If the Enigma shot fails, the second option is to launch a space shuttle and pilot it into the colony, destroying it.

To maximize their chances, X and Zero are dispatched to collect parts for the two devices with the aid of their new teammates Alia, Douglas, and Signas. The necessary parts to upgrade the Enigma and shuttle are held by eight Mavericks, and X and Zero must defeat them to claim the parts. Whether the Enigma and shuttle succeed or fail is randomly determined by the game, although the Enigma’s chances of working successfully are low even with all its parts, while the shuttle has a much higher probability of succeeding assuming all of the parts are collected.

The Mega Man X games are something of a spinoff from the main Mega Man series of classic platformers , but the main difference is in the darker nature of the storylines, with most of the much loved platforming elements still in place.

The spinoffs are generally well received and manage to keep to the spirit of the original series while adding in new narrative elements to create some highly entertaining games. This fifth entry sticks to the formula but brings some new ideas and is also well worth a look.

You might be a bit lost in terms of story if this is your first X game, so it’s not the ideal jumping on point, but if you are familiar with the plotlines, you’ll find X and Zero facing off once more with Sigma, as a virus-infected colony heads towards Earth on a collision course.

This sense of familiarity is perhaps the game’s biggest fault, as it doesn’t deviate much from the well established formula. However, it remains enjoyable enough and there are a few new elements to keep things from feeling completely stale. The visuals are lovely if you’re into that old-school vibe, with some great sprites and environments to enjoy. The difficulty level is a bit wonky but apart from this, X5 is a solid enough platformer that only disappoints in its lack of innovation.

Fifth in the X series, Mega man is just one of many, many games from a long running series that totals over games to this day, not including mobile and PSP versions.

As all Mega Man games, X5 is fast paced, dynamic and full of gripping action. You control Zero across spiked floors, on elevators, platforms, running, jumping, slashing and destroying everything in it’s sight, in the quest of defeating the Maverick. In an mecha fashion unique for Japan, the whole game looks like it jumped out of a mecha anime series. It has great art and fantastic animation, followed by dynamic music that makes the excitement all the bigger.

All in all, the game sticks to the standard Mega Man formula almost two decades old. Wether that is a good thing or a bad one, will be your call. Personally, I like it. If it’s not bad, why change it? If you liked the Mega Man series so far and don’t like changes, you will likely love the game.
